Sometimes we are given stories to consider for making into movies or features either full blown for cinemas and TV, or on a smaller scale for entry in Film Festivals. However for major productions, the potential client often has not done the necessary research required or developed a screen play, before embarking on what can be a very costly and risky venture.
Many potential movie makers don’t have the up front money to assemble a professional production team and actors as well as covering the myriad of other facets such as locations, sets, formats, multiple cameras, sound and special effects. With that said don’t give up on pursuing a story you feel will have great audience appeal. There are ways to see it on the ‘big screen’ if you have passion and persistence.
Certainly speak to us about ‘your dream’ and we will inform you what’s involved especially in relation to such vital aspects as developing a screenplay and obtaining film grant funding and investors. The production of a pilot episode for trialing with a target audience is highly recommended by us, before any large expenditure is committed.
There are lots of people and groups nearby who can help you. In particular, ‘Film Central’ which is set up to encourage local film production and attract the big film companies to make films that can use the wonderful locations that exist in Central and Western NSW. ‘Arts Outwest’ is also an excellent group to work with publicising and often organising Filmmaking Workshops, Writers’ Workshops and Film Festivals that operate in the Region from time to time.
TAFE and Charles Sturt University (CSU ) have excellent courses running in Media, Communication and Technology for those who wish to embark on training for a full time career in the fields of digital media, communication, journalism, computing, filmmaking, games development, drama, new technologies - to name a few of the many facets of a rapidly expanding communication and entertainment industry,
Groups like the ‘Remembers Project’, ‘Warp TV’ and ‘Bathurst Community Website BCW’ are always keen to have ideas/films submitted to them that have a localised appeal and can be placed in the City Library, transmitted by Satellite TV or shared on the Internet.
As a way of understanding what is going on in Media at a local level I’d advise you borrowing from Bathurst Regional Library the DVD titled ‘Launch of the Remembers Project’. Whilst a bit rough around the edges since it had to be filmed on the fly mainly by film students, it does contain a number of interviews with experienced filmmakers and samples of programs that provide you with ideas to get started in what is a most challenging, innovatory and exciting industry.
